Tzimanious

Playing Together in Augmented Reality: A Board Game for Youth Engagement.

The Hellenic DPA along with the University of Piraeus introduce the AR game Tzimanious*.

  • An augmented reality (AR) game created for classroom use or group play guided by an educator.
  • The game’s objective is to teach children how to protect their personal data in an engaging and appealing manner.
  • It should be used in conjunction with instructional sessions on personal data protection.

The game uses a traditional physical board and familiar playing patterns, combining the board with a mobile device — ideally a tablet.

  • The objective of each player is to navigate their pawn through all eight game stations, answering the questions correctly at each station, after watching an interactive video or animation on their mobile device.
  • Players can earn diamonds for each correct answer.
  • Additionally, there are bonus questions at certain spots on the board, offering extra diamonds.
  • The winner is the player who successfully completes all stations and collects the most diamonds.

There are 8 Game Stations corresponding to 10 learning topics.

  • Real Cases, Statistics, Reports.
  • Basic Personal Data Concepts.
  • Personal Data Online Sharing.
  • Personal Data Exchange on Social Media and Online Messaging.
  • Online Profiling, Targeting, Advertising, and Influence.
  • Privacy Policies.
  • Deceptive Patterns.
  • Identity Protection and Account Security.
  • Personal Data Subject Rights.
  • Children and Parents Legal Responsibility.

Before introducing the game to the classroom, the educator should begin with a teaching session that covers theoretical concepts and prepares students for gameplay. In the following session, the game is played, and in a third session, the educator can lead a discussion on the issues the children encountered. This is a suggested roadmap, but educators are encouraged to adapt it according to the specific needs and dynamics of their class.

The game has been endorsed by the minister of Education Kiriakos Pierrakakis in December 2024 who announced that it would be included in the official school curriculum.

The game is available in Greek for schools in Greece. A limited English version is also accessible, allowing you to try it independently.

We note that the English version includes only two scenarios and questions per station, whereas the full Greek version contains an adequate number of scenarios and questions to avoid repetition.
