Law 5321/2026 (‘Measures for the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 (Regulation on Artificial Intelligence) – Amendment of Law 4961/2022 (Government Gazette, Series I, Νο 146) and other provisions’) provides for a key role for the Ηellenic Data Protection Authority, designating it, inter alia:
- as the competent market surveillance authority for Artificial Intelligence systems falling under the prohibited practices of the Regulation, for high-risk systems of Annex III and for systems subject to the transparency obligations of Article 50 of the Regulation,
- as the single point of contact for Greece with the European Commission and the respective national authorities;
- as the competent authority for receiving and handling complaints concerning infringements of the Regulation,
- as a notified body for the conformity assessment of specific high-risk AI systems,
- and, together with EETT (Ηellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission), as the competent authority for the operation of the national AI regulatory sandbox.
Αs of 2 February 2026 the provisions of the AI Act on prohibited artificial intelligence practices apply, i.e. specific uses of AI considered unacceptable due to their risks to fundamental rights and European values. From 2 August 2026, the transparency obligations of section 50 of the AI Act became applicable.
